The Singapore Space Challenge (SSC) is an annual prestigious nation-wide design competition with different space-themes presented every year. It is currently in its 4^th year running.

Targeted at students aged 15 to 25, SSC aims to motivate space and technology interests amongst the young and to promote participation in space-related activities. Through this challenge, SSTA also hopes to create greater public awareness of the use of space technology and exploration.

For SSC 2011, students are to invited to design and deploy a satellite system to monitor and control aircraft movement. The system will also be used to track and determine the latitude, longitude, altitude and direction of aircrafts approaching Singapore, within Southeast Asia air-space. Information will be transmitted to the flight crew and the ground control staff in Singapore and South-East Asia, in a timely manner.

One other use of the system is to pick up emergency SOS signals of aircrafts outside territorial airspace, and support search-and-rescue operations.

The competition stretches for eight months. Teams are required to submit a detailed mission paper and computer simulation of their design for the Challenge.

SSTA also presents another exciting initiative, Mars Rover Challenge. Targeted at secondary schools, this competition is designed to interest the young in space exploration and engineering. Students will be required to design and build a Mars Rover designed for specific mission to Mars.  A Mars Rover simulation, model and PowerPoint slides detailing the schematic will be submitted by the students at the end of the competition.
