The grand prize of S$10,000 is won by a team of four. The group, named ‘Starfleet Command’, proposed a solution for space debris
Singapore, 22 September 2020 – We are excited to announce that SSC will be hosting its first-ever virtual Awards Ceremony on 23 September, 4:00pm (SGT). ‘Starfleet Command’ clinched the top award at the Singapore Space Challenge 2020. Ms Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Education and Manpower will be the Guest of Honour and she will be sharing a speech during the event. The Singapore Space Challenge concluded in February this year, but its Awards Ceremony was unfortunately cancelled due to Covid-19. The virtual Awards Ceremony is open to all to celebrate the participants and winners of SSC 2020.
The Singapore Space Challenge 2020 challenged youths to design a satellite concept of not more than five satellites (servicer) that can be used to deorbit space debris.
Unlike most of the current solutions, Starfleet Command’s solution has the ability to target a wide range of debris sizes and is reusable. The team will be presenting their project at the SSC 2020 Awards Ceremony.
‘Starfleet Command’ is an independent team made up of four participants from different walks of life, connected through their passion in space technology.

- Shanmugam Surya
- Kim Hyun Ji
- Katharina Hoe
The team walks away a grand prize of S$10,000.
A total of 75 teams from almost 10 countries, double from 2019, took part in Singapore Space Challenge 2020. After five arduous months of preparation, guidance from mentors from the industry, and industry visits, the teams submitted their proposals and ideas to our team of esteemed judges, Mr Cheong Chee Hoo (CEO, DSO), Sir Martin Sweeting (Founder & Executive Chairman, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd) and Mr Nobu Okada (CEO, Astroscale).
We are also excited to share that SSC 2021 is open for registration and it is challenging youths to design a lunar rover capable of completing missions on the moon. We want to encourage youths from all walks of life to be part of this enriching journey, to expand their knowledge and work on a project that could make them the next Elon Musk.
The Singapore Space Challenge (SSC) is a highly anticipated international space design competition that challenges youth teams to leverage space technology; from satellite mapping to GPS and GNSS. We encourage innovation in engineering to conceptualise and design space-related projects to tackle real-world challenges from disasters to improving the quality of life. The challenge is held annually and is organised by the Singapore Space & Technology Ltd (SSTL).
To date, over one thousand youths have participated in the SSC since its inception in 2007. Working in teams to solve problems developed closely with the industry, the youths derive theoretical models, design prototypes, and create simulations of their creative solutions.
